I recently reread FunnyClips B and I agree with the criticism that I’d been given. It’s a real whacky and confusing world.
When you start talking about a future world with magic and small animal dynamics, you better start explaining yourself. You either need a description at the beginning of the story, lots of exposition that may not fit into the story, or you got to write another story that introduces people into this world.
I’ve noticed that having a description would push the story into pure fantasy or science fiction. e.g.
“In the seven years war, all the major nations in the world fired nukes at each other resulting in a nuclear holocaust that wiped out nearly every single people in the world. This is a story of it’s survivors.”
In short stories, every word and idea counts. When you write a novel, you have the liberty to bring in excess ideas. The story of Ausmerica is better off as a novel, but I would rather not write 20000 to 30000 words of terrible writing. So I had chosen to begin Ausmerica off as an anthology of short stories that would go through a different part of the city/country.
Why don’t I do the logical thing and break these stories up into different worlds? The answer to this is a personal one. Growing up, Ausmerica was this fantasy that I could retreat into whenever I felt dissatisfied with my life. This happened a lot, and I want to bring this world into existence more than I want to be a successful amateur writer.
